Container Guide
What Are Secure Shredding Containers?
Secure shredding containers are locked, tamper-resistant bins designed to collect sensitive documents between shredding service visits. They feature a narrow slotted opening that allows employees to deposit paper but prevents anyone from reaching in and retrieving documents once they have been placed inside. Only your shredding service provider has the key to open and empty the containers.
These containers are the foundation of a compliant document destruction program. Without them, sensitive documents often end up in open recycling bins, desk drawers, or general trash — all of which create security risks and potential compliance violations.

How Secure Containers Work
The process is simple and designed to be as convenient as possible for your staff:
-
Deposit documents — Employees simply slide papers through the slotted opening at the top of the container. No need to remove staples, paper clips, or binder clips. File folders can go in too.
-
Locked and tamper-resistant — Once documents go in, they cannot be taken out. The container is locked with a key held only by your shredding service provider. The slot design prevents hand access.
-
Scheduled service — On your service day, a bonded, uniformed VGS technician arrives, unlocks the containers, and transfers the contents to our secure shredding truck or transport vehicle.
-
Documents are destroyed — Materials are cross-cut shredded either on-site in our mobile shredding truck or transported in a locked vehicle to our secure facility for plant-based destruction.
-
Certificate of Destruction — After every service visit, you receive an electronic Certificate of Destruction documenting what was destroyed, when, and how.
Included Free with Recurring Service
Valley Green Shredding provides all secure containers at no additional charge as part of your scheduled recurring service. We deliver the containers, place them where you need them, and swap or add containers at any time as your needs change. There is no rental fee, deposit, or separate charge for the containers themselves.
Placement Recommendations
Strategic container placement makes it easy for employees to dispose of sensitive documents properly and reduces the temptation to toss confidential papers in general trash or recycling. Here are our recommended placements:
- Next to every printer and copier — This is where misfired prints, extra copies, and draft documents accumulate. A secure container nearby captures these immediately.
- In common work areas — Break rooms, conference rooms, and shared workspaces where employees may review and discard documents.
- At reception and front desks — Faxes, visitor logs, and incoming mail with sensitive information can go directly into a container.
- In the records or file room — A large rolling bin works well here for staff pulling and purging files on a regular basis.
- Near individual workstations — Employees who regularly handle PII, PHI, or financial data benefit from a desk-side bin within arm's reach.
- IT department or server room — For collecting printouts with technical information, access credentials, or configuration details.
Containers vs. Personal Shredders
Many offices still rely on small personal or departmental paper shredders. While better than no shredding at all, personal shredders come with significant drawbacks compared to a professional container-based service:
- Security — Personal shredders typically produce strip-cut output that can be reassembled. Professional service uses industrial cross-cut shredding.
- Compliance — Personal shredders do not provide a Certificate of Destruction or documented chain of custody. Professional service does.
- Productivity — Employees spend valuable work time feeding sheets into a shredder, dealing with paper jams, and emptying bins. With containers, they simply drop documents in the slot.
- Maintenance — Personal shredders require oiling, blade replacement, and frequent jam clearing. Containers require zero maintenance.
- Capacity — Personal shredders handle a few sheets at a time. Containers hold hundreds of pounds of documents.
